Knitted hats for little ones (and big ones)

Here are some of the first hats I knitted.

Flower hats

For the green hat with the flower, I used an adaptation of this pattern for the body and this for the flower. The green and grey yarn is acrylic Uptown Worsted by Universal Yarn. The blue is a smidge of merino wool leftover from a previous project. This was my first foray into knitted flowers, and I think it was a success! I made the cream-colored hat afterward with the same flower pattern and body yarn, but a different body pattern.

  • A green, knitted hat with a gray knitted flower offset to the left. The gray flower has a teal bud in the center.
  • A close-up view of a grey and blue knitted flower affixed to a green knitted hat.
  • A cream-colored, knitted hat with a pink knitted flower offset to the left. The flower has a purple bud in the center.

A hat that will grow on (or with) you

This ribbed hat pattern was super easy and yielded a very stretchy hat. It makes a great gift for young kids, and it’s a quick knit. I made it for a colleague’s newborn.

  • A child-sized green and gray ribbed hat with a small pom-pom on top and the bottom folded up.

Houndstooth (is hard)

This was my first attempt at knitting with multiple colors in the round, following the Chunky Houndstooth Slightly Slouchy Knit Hat pattern by hooliganhooker.

There’s an issue with the pattern at the back—something to do with the round marker at the end of the row, I think. Something to revisit in a future project. For now, it’s still cute.

The grey yarn is alpaca, and the purple is merino wool. This made for an incredibly soft hat. No itchy foreheads allowed!!
