I’m not talking about boxing, I’m talking about my new favorite craft: punch needle!
Late last month, I attended a punch needle workshop at WorkshopPGH, where in just under 4 hours, I made a fun little addition to my skeleton-themed powder room.
I loved the process so much (and found needle punching to be so therapeutic) that less than 12 hours later, I was the proud owner of 3 Oxford punch needles and multiple canvases. As an added bonus, a friend who saw my work offered me a massive supply of yarn she wasn’t using. I was set!
With a friend’s baby shower approaching, I knew exactly what my next few projects would be: nursery decorations. I took on a cute little frog as my second project, inspired by some clip art and coloring pages I found from image searches.
I wasn’t thrilled with how crowded some of the details were in the face, and the textured elements of its yellow belly weren’t as easy to distinguish by sight as I wanted them to be… so I honed my technique a bit on the next piece (a fox).
Putting a little bit more attention to the borders and layers yielded amazing results. The definition was much clearer, and the tufting didn’t crowd over the flat stitches.
So, naturally, I had to make another attempt at the frog. I’m so glad I did, because it turned out great, as you can see from the image comparison below.
Both the fox and the frog (version 2.0) were a hit with the mom-to-be and many shower guests.
I haven’t started my next project just yet… but the wheels are already turning!
