How to make an infused spirit (autumn edition)

Autumn is upon us! Here’s a recipe for an apple pie-infused spirit, in celebration of the season.

I produced this video using an iPad and Autodesk Sketchbook.

Ingredients

  • 1 mason jar. I recommend wide-mouth quarts, but any size will do.
  • 1 apple, cored & sliced. Try Honeycrisp or Granny Smith; each has a distinct flavors when infused. Feel free to check back in and make recommendations for others to try!
  • 7-15 cinnamon sticks. This depends on jar size & flavor preference. You’ll want enough cinnamon sticks to help weigh down the apple slices.
  • 1-2 whole nutmeg nuts. I don’t recommend substituting ground or cracked, because that can leave the final product with sediment and grit.
  • Spirits! I used Stateside vodka, but a white or aged rum might also be tasty.

Assembly

  • Put the apple slices in the jar.
  • Add the cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and spirits.
  • Pour in enough liquor to submerge the apple and fill the jar.
  • Screw the lid on tight and give it a good swirl.
  • Leave the jar somewhere away from heat and light while the fruit and spices infuse the spirits. You can wait just a few hours or several days. The flavor gets stronger with time, but it doesn’t take long to kick in.

Mix and enjoy

Mix the infusion with your favorite accompaniment and enjoy! This gives everything a nice, autumnal warmth.

I highly recommend it on ice with a splash of pear juice and some ginger beer—apple pie mule, anyone?
